Primula vulgaris, the original woodland primrose is a native of our woodlands, bringing the delightful primrose yellow to shady areas.

Primula vulgaris - Plants of the Month February 2012 | Plants Of the Month | Scoop.it

Many hybrids have been developed from this bringing a riot of different colours; from white through yellows, pinks to blues and purples and both in single flowers such as the original, semi-double from the primlets to fully double flowers. The original woodland varieties are fully hardy but this has been lost to many of the hybrids.

These are excellent in planted containers whilst the hardy double primroses and woodland primrose can be grown in the borders in partial shade preferring moist conditions.
